RRB NTPC 2026 Selection Process

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | CBT 1 — Computer Based Test | 100 | Qualifying Only | 20× vacancy for CBT 2 |
| Stage 2 | CBT 2 — Computer Based Test | 120 | Merit-based (Final Rank) | 3× vacancy for Stage 3 |

CBAT and Typing Test are qualifying only — they do not add to final merit.

Important Notes on CBAT & Typing Test
CBAT is for life: Only 2 attempts total (across all RRB NTPC cycles) for CBAT. Candidates who have exhausted both attempts cannot apply for Station Master or GTM in future cycles. Typing Test: Tested on a computer; candidates can choose English or Hindi medium. Errors beyond acceptable limit lead to disqualification. Neither CBAT nor Typing Test marks are added to the CBT 2 merit score.

| 2019 | ~65–70 | ~55–60 |
Cut Off Trend Analysis
RRB NTPC cut offs show a slight upward trend across cycles as competition grows. Graduate Level consistently has a higher cut off than UG Level due to fewer vacancies and higher-quality applicants. For 2026 planning: target 80+ for Graduate Level (UR) and 72+ for UG Level (UR) in CBT 2. GA (50 marks in CBT 2) is the biggest differentiator — a 10-mark improvement in GA can change your rank by tens of thousands.

RRB NTPC 2026 Preparation Strategy
| Subject / Area | Priority | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness (CBT 2) | Highest (50/120) | GA carries 50 marks in CBT 2 — the biggest differentiator. Read newspapers daily. Cover Railway GK deeply (zones, HQs, projects, speed records, Vande Bharat, Kavach). Last 12 months current affairs are essential. Use Lucent GK for static topics. |
| Mathematics | High (35/120) | Focus on Arithmetic (Percentage, P&L, Interest, Ratio), Number System, Time-Speed-Distance. Learn shortcuts and formulas. 30 questions per day practice with timer. |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | High (35/120) | Series, Coding-Decoding, and Puzzles appear heavily in CBT 2. Practice 25–30 reasoning questions daily. CBT 2 puzzle difficulty is higher than CBT 1. |
| CBT 1 Preparation | Medium | CBT 1 is qualifying only. Master the basics — ensure you clear sectional and overall cut off. 100 Q in 90 min — speed + accuracy both matter. Aim for 70–75%+ to secure CBT 2 shortlisting. |
| CBAT Practice | Critical (if targeting SM/GTM) | Only 2 lifetime attempts for CBAT. Practice psychometric test batteries. Improve memory, concentration, and direction-based tasks. Don't waste an attempt without preparation. |
| Mock Tests | Essential | Weekly full-length CBT 1 and CBT 2 mocks. Analyse every test — identify weak topics. No sectional cut-off in RRB NTPC, but balance all three subjects to maximise CBT 2 score. |
Top RRB NTPC 2026 Preparation Tips
- GA is king in CBT 2: 50/120 marks from GA — invest 40% of daily study time here. Railway GK alone can give you 8–10 extra marks over competitors.
- CBT 2 is harder than CBT 1: Don't relax after CBT 1. CBT 2 has higher difficulty — especially in Mathematics and Reasoning puzzles. Level up your preparation.
- 1/3 negative marking: In CBT 1 and CBT 2 both. Skip questions where you are less than 50% sure — it saves marks from being lost to random guesses.
- Railway GK is a must: Zones, HQs, DRMs, speed records, Vande Bharat routes, Kavach anti-collision system, bullet train project, RRTS — all very frequently asked.
- Normalization: Marks are normalized across shifts. Focus on accuracy and topic coverage, not just speed.
- CBT 1 shortlisting is 20× vacancy: With massive applicants, you need to be in top 20× vacancy count of your category in your RRB zone. Don't take CBT 1 casually.
- Recommended books: R.S. Aggarwal (Quant & Reasoning) | Lucent's GK | Arihant RRB NTPC book | Kiran's Previous Year Papers | Monthly Current Affairs magazine (Pratiyogita Darpan / Arihant)
- 3-month strategy: Month 1 — foundation + all topics once; Month 2 — CBT 1 mocks + GA intensive; Month 3 — CBT 2 level mocks + daily GA revision + Railway GK.
