Stream Selection — Critical Decision
During application, you select your engineering stream — Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical. This determines which General Engineering section you attempt in both Paper-I and Paper-II. You cannot change your stream after submission. Choose based on your strongest subject and best preparation. Civil Engineering has the highest vacancy share.
SSC JE 2026 Selection Process
| Stage | Exam | Marks | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Paper-I — CBT 1 | 200 | Shortlisting + Merit |
| Stage 2 | Paper-II — CBT 2 | 300 | Final Merit |
| Stage 3 | Document Verification | — | Mandatory for joining |
Key Selection Rule
Final merit is based on Paper-II marks only. Paper-I is used to shortlist candidates for Paper-II. Minimum qualifying marks in Paper-I: UR — 30% (60 marks) | OBC/EWS — 25% (50 marks) | All others — 20% (40 marks). Paper-II carries 300 marks — 60% of total 500 marks — making it the decisive stage.
SSC JE 2026 Exam Pattern
Paper-I — CBT 1 (200 Marks | 2 Hours)
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 50 | 50 |
| General Engineering (Civil & Structural OR Electrical OR Mechanical — candidate's chosen stream) | 100 | 100 |
| Total — Paper-I | 200 | 200 |
Paper-II — CBT 2 (300 Marks | 2 Hours)
| Subject | Questions | Marks per Q | Total Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Engineering (Same stream as Paper-I — deeper and more advanced level) | 100 | 3 | 300 |
| Total — Paper-II | 100 | 3 | 300 |
Negative Marking Rules
| Paper | Negative Marking | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Paper-I | −0.25 per wrong answer | Moderate caution — consider skipping only if completely unsure |
| Paper-II | −1 per wrong answer | High caution — 1 wrong = lose 4 marks relatively (3 marks correct answer + 1 deducted) |
Paper-II Weightage Alert
Paper-II carries 300 out of 500 total marks (60%). Final merit is based on Paper-II marks alone. Each correct answer = 3 marks. Each wrong answer = −1 mark. In Paper-II, one wrong answer costs you effectively 4 marks in relative position. Focus 70% of your preparation time on Paper-II technical depth.

Top SSC JE 2026 Preparation Tips
- Paper-II is the game-changer: Final selection is purely on Paper-II marks. Prioritize technical depth above everything else.
- Paper-I cut off target: Based on 2025 data, aim for 130+ (Civil) and 130+ (Elec/Mech) — gives you a safe buffer above UR cut off.
- Paper-II negative marking: Each wrong answer costs 4 marks relatively. Skip genuinely uncertain questions in Paper-II.
- Stream selection: Choose based on your strongest subject — not vacancy count alone. Civil has more vacancies but also more applicants.
- Civil Engineering books: RCC (Pillai), Soil Mechanics (Arora), Hydraulics (Modi & Seth), Surveying (BC Punmia), Estimating (Dutta).
- Electrical Engineering books: Basic Electrical Engineering (Kothari & Nagrath), Electrical Machines (Chapman), Basic Electronics (Boylestad).
- Mechanical Engineering books: Engineering Thermodynamics (PK Nag), Fluid Mechanics (RK Bansal), Theory of Machines (SS Rattan).
- IES Master / Made Easy books: SSC JE-specific books from IES Master and Made Easy are highly recommended for both streams.
- Test series: Join a reputed SSC JE test series for Paper-II — tracking percentile is more useful than raw score alone.
